Clinical presentation:
Rapid onset of abdominal pain and distension in a 68 year old man.

The plain film shows some separation of bowel loops with 'thumb printing' appearance. Mucosal detail is blurred. The subtle lucency of gas in the portal veins in the liver is not reproduced well in this image. Typical jejunal mucosal fold thickening is revealed in the barium study (peformed in 1970 before the availability of sectional imaging). The full detail of the case management is not known. Usually nowadays, one would not give barium to a patient at risk of perforation or who would be subject to arteriography or CT scanning.
